CCTV Uses ARRI L-Series during the G20 Summit News Coverage

Senior broadcast lighting designer Ge Guangli from China Central Television (CCTV) used ARRI L-series lights to illuminate the news studios during CCTV’s live coverage of the G20 summit. In this interview with ARRI, Ge shares his experience working with L-series LED lights.
The G20 (Group of Twenty) is an international forum for the governments and central bank governors from 20 major economies. Global leaders that took part in the 2016 G20 Hangzhou summit include the president of China Xi, the president of United States Obama and the UN Secretary General Ban. CCTV offered extensive live news coverage through various mandarin and foreign language channels.
What is the most important consideration when choosing lighting equipment for broadcasting international events?
When broadcasting international and political events, extra care should be taken when lighting the faces of high profile figures. Lighting fixtures with high color rendering index are preferred for their ability to reproduce accurate and pleasing skintone. In addition, there should be a combination of hard lights and soft lights and an appropriate light level should be maintained. Lastly, back light should be positioned more towards the sides to avoid casting shadow on the news scripts.
Were there any differences between traditional fixture and ARRI LED fixture?
I find ARRI LED fixtures very trustworthy. LED fixtures offer many advantages over traditional fixtures. As lighting designers we care the most about color rendering and light output. ARRI lights have been extremely reliable while offering accurate color reproduction. Operating the lights was simple and straightforward, the color temperature can be controlled precisely. Knobs for flood to spot capability were accessible from both sides of the fixture. Also installing barn doors was fast and convenient, which made setting up lights a lot more efficient.
During the G20 news coverage, was it mostly live broadcast or tape delay? Were there any special requirements for the lighting fixtures in the news studios?
In order to ensure timeliness of news delivery, the majority of the programs were live broadcast. It was a serious challenge for our broadcast equipment.
The news team dedicated four news studios for the G20 summit coverage. There were three indoor news studios and an outdoor open air news studio. These studios were used by CCTV news channel, mandarin international channel and foreign language channel. Each channel has its distinct lighting style. Especially the studio with West Lake as backdrop required higher light level to properly illuminate the news anchors. ARRI L-series lights did an amazing job with their high output and light quality.
Were there any interesting stories when working with ARRI L-series?
During the G20 summit we had an outdoor open air news studio built on a platform. There was one time we just finished a program and we were setting up the lights in another studio. The weather was unpredictable and it suddenly started raining. We realized that the lights were still hanging outside in the rain and we retrieved them immediately. At first we were worried about potential damage but after drying the lights they had no problem at all. This again proved us how reliable and robust ARRI lights are.
ARRI L-series lights also performed well in regards to cooling. I remember once we were filming a leader’s speech, because we did not have many ARRI lights we used a LED fixture from another manufacturer as key light and ARRI ones as fill. During rehearsal we did not notice the cooling fan noise from the key light due to ambient noise. However when the speech officially started the room was a lot quieter and made the fan noise stand out. We had to turn it off and swap ARRI L-7 as the key light. The noise was immediately gone. We were able to finish filming that important session thanks to ARRI lights.
